Books - Three new books celebrate area's history

A TRIPLE book launch is taking place in Underwood later this month.

The launch is being held at St Michael's Church on Saturday, September 24, from 11am.

The books Stirring Stuff from Underwood and Bagthorpe, Kimberley Folk – Elsie and Others, and Marjorie C Bates have been written by author Stan Smith, of Brinsley, who writes under the pen name Ztan Zmith.

Stirring Tales tells the stories of people, originally from Underwood and Bagthorpe, including Franz von Werra, a German prisoner of war.

Kimberley Folk is a tale of characters who have lived in and around the Kimberley area, including Elsie Kirkham during the First World War.

And Marjorie C Bates tells the story of Derbyshire painter, Marjorie Bates, who has had her work exhibited at the Royal Academy in London.

The book launch is being run in conjunction with St Michael's anniversary celebrations and an exhibition commemorating the 400th anniversary of the translation of the Bible into English.
