Event - Spanish Civil War events (Sheffield)

FAMILIES, politicians and trade unionists will gather on Saturday to remember the nine South Yorkshire people who fought and died in the Spanish Civil War.

On the 75th anniversary of the start of the war, the International Brigade Memorial Trust has organised a rededication of the plaque in Sheffield’s city centre Peace Gardens.

The event, which starts at 11am, will be attended by Labour Sheffield Central MP Paul Blomfield, council leader Julie Dore and union officials including Unite’s Doug Patterson.

Descendants of those who travelled to Spain in the fight against General Franco’s fascists will lay flowers.

The South Yorkshire brigaders were among 35,000 communist volunteers from 53 different countries who travelled to Spain after the war broke out in July 1936.

As part of the anniversary events The University of Sheffield is putting on a series of exhibitions, launching at 6.30pm tonight at the Jessop West building, Hanover Way
