Book - Villager Brian pens childhood memories (Gringley on the Hill)

A HUTTON man has relived his youth in a new book.

At nearly 80-years-old, Brian Shaw decided to pen memoirs of his childhood in a small Nottinghamshire village, Gringley-on-the Hill, in the 1930s and 40s.

The result, Bread And Lard ... And Sugar Sarnies, is available now and is being sold in aid of St Catherine’s Hospice.

In it, Mr Shaw recounts tales of his childhood and school days and some of the characters who lived in the village.

“We had a bit of a deprived childhood. We used to go into fields when we were nearly starved and steal carrots to eat,” he said.

He also describes being called up to the RAF in 1948.

“It was a massive shock because I’d never really left the village before,” Mr Shaw said.

Bread and Lard is available now from the St Catherine’s Hospice shop in Driffield costing £6. All proceeds will be donated to the charity.
