Event - Old pit village brought to life in art exhibition (Denaby)

pictures depicting a lost way of life in a Doncaster mining village can be seen at the latest exhibition at the Chequer Road museum.

Gone is the title of a collection of photographs by Paul Booker which opened today and runs until June 18.

The exhibition brings together around 30 large-scale images of Denaby Main taken just before the estate of approximately 1,600 houses was flattened in the mid-1970s to make way for new development.

As well as illustrating the disappearance of some of the Victorian terraced streets, there are several views of the inside of the houses, in particular number 22 Braithwell Street, the house which Cyril and Polly Hollins had made their home for almost 60 years.

The display documents the end of a community and a way of life that had remained relatively unchanged for 100 years.

Mr Booker said: “The photographs are an attempt to share memories with others who were brought up knowing the area, and who would like the opportunity of a nostalgic look back on a playground and place of work.”
